Dr Milorad Mitkovic is Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Professor of Surgery at the School of Medicine, University of Nis, Director of the University Orthopaedic and Traumatology Clinic at the Clinical Center of Nis, member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA), president of the Serbian Trauma Association and visiting professor in Switzerland.
He was born in 1950, in Lebane, at the South of Serbia. He completed his education in Belgrade, Nis, London, Oxford, Cambridge, Ulm, Bruxelles, Davos, Moscow, Hannover, Tubingen, etc.
He is an active surgeon (joint replacement, arthroscopy, correction of deformities, limb lengthening, etc.) as well as a worldwide-recognized inventor (44 inventions) and scientific researcher (he has been a coordinator of 12 scientific projects).
More than 25.000 patients have been treated using his inventions. He is a founder of school and courses based on new approach in bone fixation. As a result of leading continuous dynamic research and projects, he published over 400 scientific publications (ie. articles and books).
Due to his achievements, he was awarded twenty international and national prizes, such as:
- The 1st prize (EUREKA gold medal) at the World Inventions Exhibition in Brussels, 1990
- The 1st Prize "Nikola Tesla" (gold medal), 1996
- The 1st Prize "Mihajlo Pupun" (gold medal), 1994
- The 1st prize for invention in Yugoslavia, 1989
- Great Gold Medal from Riga's Traumatology Institute, 1988
- The "January 11" Award - The most significant award of the city of Nis, 2012
- Gold Plaque of Clinical Center Nis, 1998
- The highest award of the Serbian Medical Society - "Great Seal", 2014
- Golden sign of the University of Nis, 2014
- Medal for the very best surgeon of Serbia, Military Medical Academy, Belgrade, 2015
He is the founder and president of the Serbian Trauma association - STA, as well as of the Association for Investigation and Research in External and Internal Fixation known as "School Mitkovic" (www.mitkovic.org) that organizes courses on regular bases. He is a Board member of the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery - ESTES, and active member of other distinguished international societies such as SICOT (The World Orhopaedic Organization / Societe Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopedique et de Traumatologie), AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons), EFFORT (European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology), ASAMI B & R (Association for the Study and Application of the Methods of Ilizarov and Bone Reconstruction) and AO/ASIF (Association for the Study of Internal Fixation).
He was the founder and head of Orthopaedic and Traumatology Clinic in Al-Salam hospital in Kuwait (1995-1996) and he was chief of that clinic again from 2000-2006 on visiting basis (two months in Serbia - two months in Kuwait).
His wife Gordana, MD is general medicine specialist and they have two children, daughter Marija (MD, MSc, psychiatrist and PhD candidate) and son Milan (MD, trainee in Orthopaedics and Traumatology and PhD candidate).
